1. (I)f I came here as a tourist, I wouldn’t really have an excuse to talk to people. I get an impression from every city by talking to people. At a show, people have just seen you do your most personal presentation. They’ve been singing along with songs that came from somewhere deep in your imagination. In some way it’s a kind of intimate experience with people who would otherwise be total strangers. I feel very lucky to be going on tour and to meet people in this way. Even after only talking to someone for two seconds we know that we have something in common. I was able to talk to many people tonight and I got the same impression from many people. The impression I got was that St. Louis is very supportive of the arts and supportive of people who are trying to do artistic things. There’s that rare feeling that people that live here feel that this place is good for them. This makes it easy for them to do their music or do their art. That to me is very exciting, and you don’t hear that everywhere you go.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart—“Belong”

90s guitar crunch always gets me.

Proof that AC’s compositions aren’t reliant on electronic instrumentation. This is beautiful.

To Tug Hearts, Music First Must Tickle the Neurons

This is why the slight drum change at the 3:40 mark makes the song for me.

    Weekend—“Untitled”

Instead of sugary hooks, there are cavernous wails; instead of guitars plugged into pedals, there are ghosts plugged into tornadoes.

  7. I had this song on repeat for two days straight while finishing up thesis work. So primal.

If you have the opportunity to see the Joy Formidable, take it. Unfortunately, I present said thesis when they’re in town playing the Luminary next week. Boo.

  8. Nine of those songs would perfectly in a movie party scene, when the main character takes a huge bong rip, and looks up and exhales just as the babe he has a crush on walks through the door—in slow motion.

Ty Segall, discussing the new JEFF the Brotherhood album We Are The Champions before his Gargoyle show. (Listen to this and imagine it. He’s totally right.)

Bonus fact: Ty was in the same graduating class as the cast of Laguna Beach, and told me that Kristin Cavallari was the nicest cast member and was unfairly portrayed by the show’s producers. Also that MTV destroyed the last remnants of Laguna Beach’s 60s beatnik history.
